A Piece of Rockport History
Sorenson - stair building
The history of our building dates back to the 19th century. It was originally a two story mercantile but was damaged in a fire and was rebuilt by Simon Sorenson. Under the Sorenson’s proprietorship, weather reports were posted in the window and warning flags were raised to caution the people of Rockport of dangerous weather.
Hurricane Celia damaged the building in 1970, as it did to much of Rockport.
In 1978, this Rockport Historic Building became home to the Estelle Stair Gallery and the Rockport Art Association.
Today, the building is home to The Coastal Mercantile and 406 Wine Bar. When you visit, take a look at the historic marker next to the front entrance.
